Come on over to GEN and experience Peggle Fever!

If you haven't yet been introduced to the addictive world of Peggle, it's a seemingly mindless yet maddening arcade game that involves Unicorns, Balls of Yarn, Shooting Stars, Bouncing Balls and more. What are you waiting for? Check the site for Peggle reviews all week.

In addition, we are featuring Hasbro's Family Game Night reviews, starting today and also continuing throughout the week.

Check out my Connect Four review over there right now!

April 13th, 2009

I've been doing some redesigns for the site if you haven't already noticed, some of which are still unfinished. I was going to make another site just for my art and what not, but I think I'll just stick it all on this one. It's time for some:

Zombie Jesus
For some people, Easter isn't just a holiday for egg collecting and honey ham baking. Like the residents of Boston, MA for example, a local wide zombie themed parade took over their Easter Sunday. Zombies, zombie hunters, and other costumed marauders danced in the streets for their official Zombie Outbreak 2009 parade. It was all in fun and games, and by no means an anti-Christian activity, exclaims the official Facebook event page. Question: Why can't stuff like this take place in Dallas? Oh yeah, that's right. This is Texas.

Zombie Apocalypse for XBL/PSN
Capcom is going to try it's hand at a more casual zombie themed multi-person omni-shooter set to arrive sometime later this year. A basic shooter game involving one of the most popular themes lately, zombies, it deals out over 11 weapons (including a chainsaw and an explosive-filled teddy bear) and has you fighting to survive for 55 days. At the end of the time period, the game will reward you with not making you become a zombie, as well as some more unlockables that are still under wraps. More to come.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Author Signs on for More
The suprisingly popular zombie hit from Seth Graham-Smith has spawned a number of fans and lot of press to boot. The book offers the same long-winded Jane Austen classic with a modern zombie twist. The dialogue is pretty much exactly the same, but with some interchangeable words or sentences here and there. All in all, an ingenius idea that I wish I had undertook first. Anywho, his success on his zombdaption led to his signing on with Grand Central Press to produce a couple more books, the first being Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, where, you guessed it: tells of Abraham Lincoln in his glory days and what it would have been like if he was a vampire hunter. A film adaptation of Pride is also in the works. Sounds exciting, but I'd really like to see Moby Zombie Dick.

I haven't drawn much this year on personal time, but somehow I managed to crank out three in one weekend. Ta da:

More to come. I had some great ideas about my graphic novel this week and can't wait to put them on paper. My goal of having it completed by the end of this year is fastly approaching! April? When did this happen!

March 25th, 2009

It's Wednesday, March 25th and I'm not motivated to do a single thing. Lately, my friend Ariel and I have decided that we were going to try and be 'runners'. This is extremely laughable in my case, as my version of running consists of trying to score the last donut or mow down overzealous fans at a nine inch nails concert. This program, dubbed "From Couch Potato to Runner" does just that: it takes you, slowly, on a few week long course to transform you into somewhat of a runner from a couch potato. The workout consists of alternating bouts of running and walking in timed intervals. Not so bad right? HA! The minute long run required every minute of walking just about kills me. Somehow I manage to accomplish it, but I can't squeeze out a word of help in the mean time. Suffer in silence.

If you don't know me, you probably think I'm an over-sized whale at this point. This is not true, per see, I just...don't run. I've been a dancer 20 years of my life (15 serious), a fencer, and even dabbled in martial arts. However, I have not attempted any form of rigorous exercise (besides dancing around and being my usual hyper self) since I acquired the fattening nine to fiver. Hence the fear of running. I'm doing it though, and I'll report how long it will last. I'm already sore up to my elbows and almost pass out as soon as I hit home.

Anywho, back to the no motivation thing. Sometimes I become a hermit and don't get on the internet....for days. (Besides checking email and what not for work). I crawl into my hole and read my latest book or play my latest game or what have you, keeping my laptop neatly closed. I need to stop this habit.

I love Australian bands. Empire of the Sun, the latest creation from masterminds Nick Littlemore (from Pnau and Teenager) and Luke Steele (from The Sleepy Jackson) is something worth noticing. FYI, I always want to call him Luke Cage. The song is pretty okay at first listen, but the music video escalates it to EPIC WORTHY material. The duo traveled over to China and other parts of the world to create a visual explosion worthy of any fantasy fic. In it, Luke appears to be teaching Nick the ways of the gods. I can't explain how good it is, see for yourself:

(I don't know how to frickin upload videos, so here's a lameass link)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmM2RwlxGt0

In an interview, Luke explained how they wanted to make a Star Wars-esque homage, with Nick being his little apprentice. (Note the light saber type thingy). I like this thing.

My cat is driving me crazy.

I finished Resident Evil 5 this past weekend.

But before I go into that, I want to thank everyone again that left comments on my posts over at GEN...I owe you all cupcakes. Name your flavor.
Resident Evil 5 quick review:

Though Resident Evil by name, this latest installment was anything but terrifying. Sure, the occasional hula skirt wearing infected or random spider horde might set your pulse racing a time or two, but overall, the atmosphere was rather...pretty. This could be due in large to the fact that about 3/4ths of the game was set outside, in brightly lit, sunny areas. The other parts were spent ransacking underground tombs and caves, abandoned laboratories (what's a resident evil without one?), and a large ship. The bosses of the game were nothing more than giant worm-infested creatures similar to those of previous games-nothing too scary. But the dogs-oh god, the dogs were ridiculously creepy! They were on you within seconds and then their disgusting heads fanned out into that alien-like little creature it held inside of them. SHIVER. Anyways...the infected themselves just seemed to be a particularly angry bunch. In fact, some of the villains (minus the chain-saw and giant axe wielders) were downright hilarious: the hula skirt sporting men gave me quite the chuckle. Wesker himself, though a mutated villain at the end, was never that scary either. In fact, I thought him to be the sexiest of the bunch, working Matrix-like moves and donning a suave black outfit to match.

Though not too scary, this game was definitely jam-packed with an intriguing story line and easy to solve puzzles. Paralleling Resident Evil 4, this incarnation focused on the action and destruction elements that were not abundantly present in the earlier Resident Evils. Though the music was ominous, the definition of horror never really sprung to mind. The action was fairly intense at times, and playing with a buddy made it all the more worth while.

Speaking of co-op, this was by far one of the most entertaining multiplayer games I've ever played. Most multiplayer games center around one or a few specific areas and each of their levels never seem to deviate away from that theme. Like I mentioned earlier, this game takes you on a ride through a plethora of different areas and regions to explore. Not only that, but you steer around mini motor boats and get to ride on the back of a truck shooting at rabid bikers (definitely one of the highlights). There are numerous puzzles to solve, treasures to be found, and regions to explore and loot. Both Chris and Sheva each play a vital role within the game, the focus spread out fairly evenly. The AI is pretty incredible too, with Sheva making perfect shots almost 100% of the time to cover your back. The heart of the game, though, is truly present when there are two brains behind the controller. Being able to strategize together and eliminate the latest Uroboros reject threat and hoisting Sheva onto certain areas to better cover Chris's back really comes in handy at defeating the enemies and enjoying the game to it's fullest extent. Warning: may also cause numerous fights with boyfriend/girlfriend/roommate.

As usual, the players are both scored at the end of each level, and the higher the score, the more points you are given. At the end of the game, you can use your points to buy locked outfits (tribal for sheva anyone?), action figures, infinite ammo for your guns, and more. You also unlock the Mercenaries mode, which basically allows for you or you and a partner to basically kill off as many enemies as possible in as little time as possible. It's pretty exciting. Also a really nifty treat when you beat the game, is the option to play the game in Classic-which sets the game's visuals in black and white. So very very cool.

The story line was pretty interesting and it was fairly obvious that Chris would be reunited with Jill at some point along the way. She also made for quite the interesting Matrix-like experience towards the end. (By the way, why the eff does Jill have blond hair?) Sheva's back story was briefly touched upon, but it was nothing worth noting. It's a shame, really, because she is such an interesting and beautiful character that truly held her own in battle. She's no Ashley, that's for sure. Also worth noting: the origins and explanations of Tricell was explored, yet there was no mention of Ada anywhere in sight. She was obviously working for this organization, but no evidence of her was present in any part of the game. This is very annoying, because it is also obvious that this Resident Evil chapter has closed with the death of Albert Wesker. Many loose ends are still abound and I can only hope that Capcom will turn around and get the creator back on board and churn out something in the future with Claire (as she is one of the youngest and a good character to run). Time will tell.

All in all, I truly enjoyed every part of this game and welcomed the multiplayer option. It didn't feel like Resident Evil, but it had Chris and Jill and a very intimidatingly sexy Wesker, so that made up for part of it. Don't go in expecting a survival horror game, this is no Dead Space. Take it in stride and enjoy the game for it's high-paced action and good storytelling. And watch out for those over sized lickers. Yeah, they're back.

February 20th, 2009

Lately it seems as if zombie themed video games are infiltrating the majority of the market. If you're like me and let your Wii collect dust in the corner, it's time to break out that feather duster. Titles like House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop and Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers make their way exclusively to Nintendo's Wii. Dead Rising and Onechanbara are both already available for the 360, but under slightly different names. Is the zombie trend dominating the Wii market right now? It appears to be so, and I'm not complaining. Other than Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Mario Kart, and a few others, the Wii has yet to see some really stand out titles for it's advanced platform. Generally aimed at the mass population and 'mom' and 'kid' players, the games available for the Wii have been rather tame and light-hearted. Don't get me wrong, I love the occasional fun and friendly title, but if I'm really going to invest some solid game time, it's going to have to capture my attention for longer than a couple hours. My free time is too little and too precious nowadays. (Stupid 9-5).

The introduction of all these new zombie titles for the Wii has me more than a little excited. I have already played all versions of the games so far (Dead Rising and Onechanbara on the 360, House of the Dead 1 and 2 on the Wii), so I'm pretty interested to see how they'll all play out on the console. I love the idea of using one of their zap guns to shoot zombies at your screen, but I'm also a little scared. Let's just say that Wii fit won't be necessary after I get my hands on that zapper.

I am particuarly intrigued by House of the Dead: Overkill. After getting a sneak peek at NYCC, I immediatly put it on my 'to buy when it's used' list. This list consists of pretty much ALL of the games I want (for the most part), so it has no bad connotations. Overkill possesses a Grindhouse-esque quality and literally almost rips off Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. I'm not complaining though; I loved the movie and its vintage styling, so I welcome Overkill with open arms. Hopefully someone will play and sell that game back fairly soon. I'd like to pick up that Wii remote again.
